The role of the Youth Summer Camp Leader is to co-facilitate and implement all aspects of Quadra Village Community Centre’s Summer Connections Youth Program in conjunction with the Youth Programs Facilitator.

Reports to: Youth Programs Coordinator

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead facilitation of all aspects of the Summer Connections program

  • Approach project work utilizing community development, asset building, youth/community engagement and other best practice strategies.

  • Facilitate life and social skills development (e.g., pro social behavior, communication) and self-worth development for youth and community members

  • Identify and support youth who are undergoing social challenges and work with them on useful skills through mentoring, teachable moments, and activities

  • Ensure maintenance and tabulation of attendance and statistics regarding Youth Programs

  • Write quarterly reports required for the applicable programs

  • Respond to general inquiries regarding Quadra Village Community Centre, and to share in the work of maintaining a responsive and inclusive community centre.

  • Be familiar with and implement Quadra Village Community Centre’s policies, procedures, and practices, as well as the Youth Programs Handbook and the Youth Programs Training Manual.

  • Perform other related duties when required and approved by the Youth Programs Coordinator or Executive Director.

  • Ensure the Youth Centre, the Centre and other program spaces are suitable, clean, and safe for the operation of youth and community programs

  • Foster a connection to key family members, youth supports and other assets that can help with a youth’s life success

  • Performs building opening and closing procedures as required

  • Keeps upper floor of Centre clean (dishes, kitchen, tables, furniture, papers, etc.) Participate in kitchen duties such as making lunches and clean up.

  • Participates to ensure a safe environment; observes potential hazards and reports them to other staff.  May assist to remedy hazards

  • Facilitates and implements our Summer Connections Program

  • Staffs out-trips exploring the community and provides creative, social and recreational experiences that empower the youth to help them make healthy choices in their lives while building a sense of belonging and community

  • Prepares healthy snacks for each adventure


Qualifications:

  • Commitment to anti-oppressive, decolonial, and anti-racist practice.

  • Working towards a post-secondary diploma/degree in Child and Youth Care or comparable education or minimum of one year of work experience in group facilitation working with high-risk youth

  • Criminal Record Check is required

  • Standard First Aid

  • Preference to candidates with two or more years’ experience working with high-risk youth in a community centre setting, with lived experience, knowledge, and/or awareness of Indigenous populations and diverse cultures

  • Class 4 Driver’s License, Food Safe and YPQI training is an asset

Applicants must be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs Program. *To be eligible, youth must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

    *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.


Hours of Work and Other Contract Terms:

Hours of Work: ·35 hours per week, Monday through Friday

Term: 10 hours of training will begin during the week of June 23rd, followed by 9 weeks of full-time work from June 30th to August 29th

Closed on Statutory holidays.

Salary and Benefits:

  • $22.99/hour plus 6% pay in lieu of vacation  

  • Immediate enrolment in the Employee & Family Assistance Program

  • Training and development applicable to role
